Environmental Working Group (EWG)
EWG educates and empowers consumers to make safer and more informed decisions about the products they buy and the companies they support. A 30 year old non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment, Environmental Working Group (EWG) is the leader in environmental and human health advocacy. EWG, drives consumer choice and civic action with breakthrough research and an informed public. EWG's mission is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. EWG’s groundbreaking research has changed the debate over environmental health. From households to Capitol Hill, EWG’s team of scientists, policy experts, lawyers, communication experts and programmers has worked tirelessly to make sure someone is standing up for public health when government and industry won’t.
Through EWG’s reports, online databases, mobile apps and communications campaigns, they are educating and empowering consumers to make safer and more informed decisions about the products they buy and the companies they support. In response to consumer pressure, companies are giving up potentially dangerous chemical ingredients in their products and improving their practices.
EWG’s reports and consumer guides include: EWG’s Food Scores (rating over 80,000 products), EWG’s Shoppers Guide to Pesticides in Produce / The Clean 15 & The Dirty Dozen, EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning (ranking 2,000 household cleaning products), EWG’s Guide to Sunscreens, EWG’s Skin Deep Database (rating over 80,000 personal care products) and more.
Based on EWG’s Skin Deep®, EWG and HLB developed the EWG VERIFIED™ mark licensing program. EWG's SkinDeep® rates products based on ingredients, an important indication to help determine the potential health concerns associated with products. EWG Verified™ takes the EWG SkinDeep® rating system one step further – by also asking companies to submit significantly more detailed information to help confirm that companies are making full disclosure to their consumers, that their products are adequately preserved and free of contaminants, and that manufacturing processes meet EWG's rigorous criteria. Before a company is allowed to use the EWG VERIFIED™ mark, it must meet all of EWG’s rigorous criteria and provide additional information not found on the label – an effort to drive the market toward greater transparency.
